Know what every night of care is worth before you agree to a care plan
Child support is worked out by a fixed formula, and a single night of care either side of a line can change it by thousands of dollars a year, every year until your youngest turns 18. This calculator runs that formula on your own figures for free. The full report prices every option you have.
Child support is not a guess. It is a formula, and the nights of care drive it.
Most parents agree on a care arrangement first and find out what it means for child support later, when a letter arrives with a number on it and no working. But the number comes from an eight step formula in the law. Each parent's income has a self-support amount of $31,046 taken off. The two results are added together to give each parent's share. Then the nights each parent has the children are turned into a share of the children's costs, using a table with seven bands.
Five of those seven bands are flat. Between 52 and 127 nights a year, one more night of care changes nothing at all. Then one more night crosses a line and the amount moves. The lines fall at 52, 128, 176, 190, 238 and 314 nights a year. Most people sign a parenting plan without knowing where the nearest line is. Working it through with a family lawyer typically costs $1,500 to $5,000, at $350 to $650 an hour.
A care arrangement is usually agreed once and paid on every week for years. One night on the wrong side of a line repeats in every one of those weeks.
What the free child support calculator works out
- Who pays, and how much. All eight steps of the formula Services Australia uses, run on your own incomes, nights of care and children's ages, using the figures in force from 1 January 2026.
- Your care percentage and cost percentage. What your nights of care turn into, and which of the seven care bands you are in.
- The fixed and minimum rates. Whether the minimum rate of $551 a case or the fixed rate of $1,825 a child applies instead of the ordinary formula. The fixed rate can apply where the paying parent's income is under $26,720.
- Second families and other children. Children from another relationship living with either parent, more than one child support case at a time, and a grandparent or other carer looking after the children.
- How far apart your options are. The gap in dollars between the options open to you, so you can see whether the difference is worth a conversation.
What the full report adds
- Your child support at every number of nights. All 365 of them, with each line in the care table marked, so you can see what one more or one fewer night would change before you agree to a plan.
- All ten reasons to change an assessment, each priced. The law lists ten reasons a parent can ask for an assessment to be changed, such as private school fees or high costs of contact. The report shows what each one could be worth on your figures, and what evidence each one needs. Applying costs nothing.
- Every year until your youngest turns 18. The children's costs rise when a child turns 13, and child support for a child usually ends when they turn 18. The report shows each year in turn, so the total is the real one.
- A PDF to take to a lawyer or a mediator. One payment of $19, no expiry, run as often as care or income changes. A family lawyer's child support advice typically costs $1,500 to $5,000. Arriving with the formula already worked through means that money goes on advice, not arithmetic.
What it will not do
It is not legal or financial advice. It does not tell you what care arrangement to agree to, and it does not tell you whether to apply for a change of assessment. Services Australia makes the actual assessment, and it decides any change of assessment application on the evidence in front of it. The calculator shows the arithmetic on the figures you enter. A family lawyer can give advice about your own situation and act for you if it goes to court.
It covers child support only. Parenting orders, property settlement, spousal maintenance and Family Tax Benefit are separate questions it does not answer. If you are not safe, contact 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732. Everything here runs on the child support figures in force from 1 January 2026.
What people ask before they run it
How is child support calculated in Australia?
Child support is worked out with an eight step formula. Each parent's adjusted taxable income has a self-support amount of $31,046 taken off, plus an amount for any other children they support. The two results are added together, and each parent's share is their income percentage. Nights of care become a care percentage, which a table turns into a cost percentage. Income percentage minus cost percentage decides who pays and how much.
Do you still pay child support with 50/50 shared care?
Usually, yes. Equal care gives both parents a 50% cost percentage, but it does not make their incomes equal, so the parent with the higher child support income generally still pays. Nothing is payable only when both parents' child support incomes are also equal. The 50% band runs from 176 to 189 nights a year, and every night in that range gives the same answer.
Does my new partner's income affect child support?
No. A new partner's income is not used in a child support assessment, on either side, at any income. Only the two parents' own adjusted taxable incomes count, and a non-parent carer's income is not counted either. A partner's income can affect Family Tax Benefit, which is a separate payment with separate rules. That is usually where the confusion starts.
How many nights a year is shared care for child support?
Shared care starts at 128 nights a year, which is 35% of the nights, or about five nights a fortnight. At 128 nights the cost percentage moves from a flat 24% to 25%. From there, each extra percentage point of care is worth two points of cost percentage. The biggest single step is much lower down, at 52 nights a year.
How much difference does one extra night of care make?
It can be worth nothing at all or thousands of dollars a year, depending on which side of a step you are on. The care table has seven bands and five of them are flat, so between 52 and 127 nights a year an extra night is worth nothing. Then one more night crosses a line. The steps fall at 52, 128, 176, 190, 238 and 314 nights a year.
What is the minimum child support payment?
The minimum annual rate is $551 a case, and it only applies where the paying parent has less than regular care (under 14%) of every child in the case. A separate fixed annual rate of $1,825 a child applies to a paying parent whose adjusted taxable income is under $26,720, who received no income support payment in the last relevant year, and who has less than shared care. Both can be reduced on application.
What is the self-support amount for 2026?
The self-support amount is $31,046 a year for the child support period starting 1 January 2026. It is one third of annualised male total average weekly earnings. It is taken off both parents' adjusted taxable incomes before anything is shared out, whatever they earn and wherever they live, and it is indexed every 1 January.
What is a change of assessment, and does it cost anything?
A change of assessment is an application to have the formula set aside for your case because it gives an unfair result, and applying costs nothing. The law lists ten reasons in section 117(2), and you have to make out at least one of them with evidence. Either parent can apply. Services Australia decides it rather than a court, and the other parent gets to respond.
What are the 10 reasons to change a child support assessment?
Section 117(2) sets out ten: the high cost of spending time with a child; the child's special needs; an education both parents intended; the child's own income or property; money or property already transferred for the child; child care costs for a child under 12; necessary expenses that reduce capacity to pay; income, earning capacity or resources the assessment misses; a duty to maintain another child or person; and a resident child.
My income has dropped. Can I get my child support changed?
Yes, if your income has dropped by at least 15%, you can lodge an income estimate. It takes effect from the day you lodge it and never before, so every week of delay is a week assessed on the old figure. A drop of less than 15% is not enough on its own, and would need one of the ten change of assessment reasons instead.
How long do I have to report a change in care to Services Australia?
You have 28 days. Report a care change within 28 days and the new level generally applies from the day care actually changed. If you report it later and your care went up, the change usually applies only from the day you told them. If your care went down, it still applies from when it happened.
Can grandparents get child support in Australia?
Yes. A grandparent or other non-parent carer can apply for child support if they care for the child at least 128 nights a year and are not the partner of either parent. The carer applies for child support from both parents, not just one. The carer's own income is never counted in the assessment, and neither is their partner's.
Does salary sacrifice reduce child support?
No. Salary sacrificing into super lowers your tax but does nothing to your child support. The assessment uses adjusted taxable income, which adds four things back onto taxable income: reportable fringe benefits, reportable super contributions, net investment losses and foreign income. Negative gearing works the same way, with the loss added straight back. Both parents' figures are printed on the assessment notice.
Can private school fees be included in child support?
Yes, through a change of assessment under reason 3, but only where both parents intended the child to go to that school. The test is what both parents planned, not what one of them now wants, and enrolment forms signed by both parents are the strongest evidence there is. The parent paying the fees is credited with them, and applying costs nothing.
Is this calculator the official child support assessment?
No, and nothing here pretends to be. Services Australia runs the child support scheme and is the only body that can tell you what your assessment actually is. This calculator applies the published rules to the figures you type in, shows every step, and prices options a quick estimate cannot show.
